You can change it by editing the file sudo -i scratch-text-editor /etc/lightdm/pantheon-greeter.conf There you will find the line default-wallpaper=/usr/share/backgrounds/elementaryos-default Add a line to the file something like this: default-wallpaper=/usr/share/backgrounds/168.jpg Logout and you can see the change.

This is due to a permissions bug that occurs when the first time you've run Scratch is as a privileged user. You end up with a directory in ~/.local/share/scratch-text-editor that you don't own. To fix this issue: Make sure you don't have any unsaved files in Scratch when run as root (with the sudo command). This fix will delete those files. Open Terminal ...

Apps designed for elementary OS save their state and open and close instantly. In this way, there is functionally little difference between close and minimize. You can read more about the rationale on the elementary blog. There is also a follow up post. What can I do instead of minimizing? There is still a way to minimize an application in elementary OS. ...

I tried installing pm-utils and invoking sudo pm-hibernate but that didn't work. Can you be more specific? As @Lewis noted, hibernate is disabled by default (even in Ubuntu). If you wish to hibernate manually with pm-hibernate examine the pm-utils logs (less /var/log/pm-suspend.log) for clues. Enable Hibernate If everything appears to be successful in ...

elementary OS does not support GtkStatusIcon (commonly referred to as system tray), and will drop support for the Ayatana Indicator API in the next release. GtkStatusIcon (the old API for apps to place icons in the panel) has been deprecated since 2014 and is not implemented in elementary OS. Please file a report with application developers that are still ...

Both wingpanel-slim and super-wingpanel were developed and maintained by a developer on Launchpad called ~heathbar. Unfortunately, it looks like he abandonded both projects and did not update them to work with Freya (last change to wingpanel-slim was 2013-11-19, last change to super-wingpanel was 2014-03-04). Therefore, sadly, there is (currently) no way to ...

The security standard Google is talking about is called OAuth. It's a modern technology to authenticate a user. As the Wikipedia article states: Google supports OAuth 2.0 as the recommended authentication mechanism for all of its APIs. Geary is using IMAP/POP3 authentication, not OAuth. That's the problem. elementary OS actually supports OAuth ...

Please keep in mind that elementary supports its penultimate releases only slightly into its current release's life. The older software below is unsupported by the developers and is provided here primarily for purposes of history and curiosity. A librarian once told me about the lifecycle of periodicals. At first, they are common, used, and after some time, ...

Just copy your wallpaper to /usr/share/backgrounds (you're going to need root privileges to do so) and then select your wallpaper from System Settings -Desktop - Wallpaper. You can make beautiful screenshots of windows with shadow using screenshot-tool. Add this PPA and install package: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:elementary-os/daily sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install screenshot-tool sudo apt-add-repository -r ppa:elementary-os/daily Example: Supported only GTK3+ apps.

Uninstall the package libreoffice-gtk3 and install libreoffice-gtk instead. sudo apt-get remove libreoffice-gtk3 sudo apt-get install libreoffice-gtk LibreOffice should be usable again.

I've encountered this problem before: it's caused by slingshot crashing while backgrounded. There is a very easy way to fix it. Open a terminal, either from plank or by using the shortcut [super] + [T] and enter: pkill slingshot The next time you click the applications indicator slingshot will restart and work as normal.

The desktop environment used is Pantheon, not Gnome. And since elementary OS uses Gala (which is based on the Gnome 3 window manager Mutter) - not Compiz - as it's window manager, you can't use the Compiz Config manager: One could say, it's the core of elementary OS.

You can change this behaviour either in dconf editor: org -> gnome -> mutter and uncheck the box " workspaces-only-on-primary" or if you do not have installed dconf-editor you can use following terminal commands: gsettings get org.gnome.mutter workspaces-only-on-primary to check the current setting. Probably it is "true". gsettings set org.gnome....

EDIT: This has been fixed in the latest release of elementary OS. Please download and install the latest release from our home page. I've voted to close this as a duplicate of the How to Report an Issue question. This is a pretty well known bug and it affects Ubuntu as well as elementary OS. The Ubuntu hardware team is hard at work on this issue, but there ...

dconf-editor (Install dconf-editor by typing sudo apt-get install dconf-editor in the command line.) Open dconf-editor and navigate to org.gnome.desktop.interface and check the value of scaling-factor. It is probably set to 2 (which is for high density displays) and you should change it to 1. For now, non-integer values will not work.

Update elementary OS Freya 0.3.2 has been released and fixes many of these issues. If you are installing or working on 0.3.1 and are experiencing these issues, we recommend you upgrade. The simple workaround would be: Loginto your gmail account Click on the link : Enable access for less secure apps Turn ON Now login to geary. It will work now. Don't get panic with the word "less secure" See Gmail: Geary doesn't meet modern security standards

At @Life's suggestion, I checked out this post. The solution was quite easy and worked like a charm (Thanks, @Life!). This is intentional for the reasons you pointed out. At the moment we can't have independent workspace switching. The window manager sees multiple displays as one big workspace in Luna. This can be frustrating because one of the big benefits of having another display is to have a place for things you always want to see like documentation or chat or your ...
