The aspect ratio can be changed: To enable it, try running this command: gsettings reset-recursively org.yorba.shotwell.crop-settings Image Source

Thanks to @magicalex over on Ask Ubuntu, I have found something pretty close to what I was looking for. Sometimes it can crop the images slightly but you can click regenerate to try another ...
