Theme unexpectedly changed to Gnome
Maybe the elementary-theme isn't deleted, but it just changed it somehow?
Try opening terminal and execute:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme elementary

Icons not showing
I have fixed it by copying hicolor directory from /usr/share/icons/ to ~/.local/share/icons/

Unable to Log In - Starting the session has failed
what I suggest you is to install via terminal lightdm and pantheon-greeter also.
sudo apt install lightdm pantheon-greeter. Then run sudo dpkg --configure -a.

elementary OS has the MATE DE
My eOS desktop was ruined by installing a GNOME screensaver.
Re-installed eOS and problem solved.
