No bash_profile and when I define it, it doesn't load

.bash_profile and .profile are only executed by login shells and text consoles. Terminal apps on GNU/Linux are neither so they use .bashrc instead. AFAIK only macOS uses a login shell on its Terminal …

You can just replace it with bash, unless you are using other shells such as zsh. … Instead of just executing: exec $SHELL Just do this: exec bash The link you have provided also suggested that you can instead just open a new tab/window and continue from there. …
