I have Windows 10 + Elementary OS 5.1 dual boot setup; GTX 1080Ti, driver version: 460.32.03

When I reboot from Elementary OS back to Elementary OS, the resolution is low (I can't change it in display settings), nvidia-smi shows my GPU and other info but process list is empty. nvidia-settings shows empty window.

The weird part is that when I reboot from Windows to Elementary OS, everything is fine.

I have tried reinstalling GPU drivers a few times using different methods to install them each time. Currently I have driver installed from .run file downloaded from NVidia's website.

Does anyone know what might be the issue? Going off the fact that Win to Elemenatry reboot works and Elementary to Elementary doesn't, can it be related to Grub config? I used grub customizer to customize its behavior (just lowered entry time and changed default boot option), could it be that it messed something up?

  • The option gfxmode sets the resolution in the grub screen. But it doesn't affect your system resolution. The behaviour you describe is really strange. I'd recommend installing the drivers with sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall instead of anything else. The .run file from nvidia website is not intended to be used like this. If you have another graphics card (maybe inside your cpu) it may be causing this. Try installing an updated kernel and xorg maybe: sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04. Also add CPU info if the issue persists.
