I set up a HP Touchsmart , can hear sounds over headphone not over built in speakers

I set up a HP Touchsmart , can hear sounds over headphone not over built in speakers. In system preferences the speaker is listed, no sound. when I am plugging in the head phone prefs are switching to head phone an the sound is playing. What do I wrong?
