Videos encoded with HEVC (x265) codec do not play back correctly in VLC 3.0.71 (elementary OS 5). The soundtrack is played back normally, but the picture is not: a white rectangle is being displayed instead of it.

Interestingly enough, on the same machine these same videos can be played back just fine in Videos (elementary's stock video app). My questions are:

  1. Does Videos app contain some special HEVC codec version that is available only to Videos and not to the entire system / other multimedia apps?

  2. How can I enable HEVC playback in VLC 3.0.71? I tried to install vlc-plugin-libde265 as suggested here, but got E: Unable to locate package vlc-plugin-libde265 error. (Yes, I have added the suggested repo previously.)
