Title says it all. I installed some updates yesterday (hadn't updated in around ~6 months) to my Freya (don't laugh) system. Today, whenever I enter my password and press enter, a black screen flashes, and I get sent back to the login screen.

If I enter a terminal and run cat ~/.xsession-errors, I get:

Script for auto started at run_im.
Script for default started at run_im.

Well, that was easier than I thought...

I just did Ctrl+F1 -> logged in -> sudo chown ryan:ryan .Xauthority.

This is a known bug in dbus.

Workaround:

sudo mv /etc/xdg/autostart/at-spi-dbus-bus.desktop /etc/xdg/autostart/at-spi-dbus-bus.desktop.backup
